Hip-hop was not invented in a music studio. It was born at a back-to-school party.
In August 1973, in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, a young DJ known as Kool Herc played records at his sister's party. He noticed that dancers loved the 'break' โ the part of a song with only drums. So he used two record players to repeat the breaks again and again, and the crowd went wild. That simple idea became the heartbeat of a new culture.
Classic hip-hop culture has four elements. The DJ plays and mixes the records. The MC, or rapper, speaks rhythmic lines over the beat. B-boys and b-girls dance during the breaks โ this is breaking, often called breakdancing. And graffiti artists paint colorful pieces on walls and trains. For many young people in poor neighborhoods, these four arts were a way to compete, to shine, and to be somebody.
At first, hip-hop lived only at block parties, and many people thought it was a passing fashion. Then, in 1979, a rap song appeared on the radio and became a worldwide hit. Record companies suddenly paid attention. In the following decades, rap grew from party music into powerful storytelling about real life on real streets.
Today, hip-hop is one of the most popular music styles on the planet. People rap in French, Korean, Arabic, and hundreds of other languages, and breaking even appeared at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
Not bad for a party trick with two record players.
