Word of the day
One useful English word every day — with a simple definition, a real example sentence, audio, and its CEFR level. Come back tomorrow for the next one, or practice the whole week's words in one quiz.
How it works
- One word a day, alternating levels — an easy everyday word one day, a phrasal verb or idiom the next, an advanced word after that. The B1 pill shows each word's CEFR level.
- Hear everything: tap 🔊 to hear the word or the example sentence.
- Make it stick: add the word to your flashcards for spaced-repetition review, or quiz yourself on the week's words. Every word links to the full list it comes from.
Frequently asked questions
- How is the word of the day chosen?
- Words rotate daily through a curated pool of 240 useful words and phrases taken from ESLDesk's own vocabulary lists — everyday adjectives, phrasal verbs, idioms, academic words, and advanced vocabulary. Levels alternate day by day, so beginners and advanced learners both get words that fit.
- Is the word the same for everyone?
- Yes — the rotation follows the calendar, so every visitor sees the same word on the same date. The word changes at your local midnight.
- How can I practice the words?
- Two ways: the “Practice this week's 7 words” button opens an adaptive matching quiz with the last seven words, and “Add to My Flashcards” puts today's word into your spaced-repetition deck so it comes back right before you would forget it.
