Room 12 has a class pet. It is a hamster, and his name is Peanut. Every weekend, one student takes Peanut home. This weekend, it was Tom’s turn.

On Sunday morning, Tom went to feed Peanut. The cage door was open. Peanut was gone!

Tom looked under his bed. He looked behind his books. He looked in his shoes. No Peanut.

“Mom!” Tom called. “Peanut is lost!”

The whole family looked for the hamster. Then Tom’s little sister pointed at the kitchen. “Listen,” she said. There was a small sound behind the fridge.

Dad moved the fridge very slowly. There was Peanut, with a piece of cereal in his mouth.

“Peanut!” Tom laughed. “You wanted a snack!”

Tom put Peanut back in the cage and closed the door well. On Monday, he told the class the whole story. Now everyone calls the hamster Peanut the Explorer.
