On Saturday morning, Mia and her dad went to the animal shelter. Mia wanted a dog for a long time. She walked past the cages and looked at every dog. Then she saw a small brown puppy with big ears. The puppy looked at her and moved his tail fast.
“Can we take him home?” Mia asked.
“Yes,” Dad said. “But a puppy is a lot of work. You must feed him and walk him every day.”
“I can do it,” Mia said.
At home, the puppy ran around the living room. He found one of Dad’s socks and played with it.
“He needs a name,” Dad said.
Mia thought for a minute. The puppy had a white spot on his chest, like a button. “Buttons!” she said. “His name is Buttons.”
That night, Buttons slept in a box next to Mia’s bed. Before she closed her eyes, Mia said, “Good night, Buttons. Tomorrow we go to the park.”
