Find the prepositions — quick guide

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another part of the sentence. It always comes BEFORE a noun or pronoun (the object of the preposition).

🎯 Common prepositions to watch for

Place: in, on, at, under, near, behind, between, beside, above
Time: at, on, in, before, after, during, since, until, by
Direction: to, into, onto, from, through, across, over, around
Relationship: of, with, for, by, about

Multi-word prepositions (because of, in spite of, in front of, next to, on top of) count as one preposition each.

One preposition per sentence
The book is on the table.
She lives in Paris.
We met at the corner.
He sat next to me.
The cat is hiding under the bed.
I wrote a letter with a pen.
We arrived at 8 o’clock.
She is happy about the news.
The package will arrive by Friday.
The flight was canceled because of the storm.
Two prepositions per sentence
The book on the table is mine, and the pen in the drawer is yours.
She lives in a small house near the park.
The keys are on the table in the kitchen.
He walked into the room with a smile.
The cat jumped from the chair onto the bed.
She arrived at the office at 9 a.m.
I waited for her at the bus stop.
He gave a present to his friend for his birthday.
She studies hard during the day and relaxes in the evening.
The painting on the wall was made by a famous artist.
Three or more prepositions per sentence
The man with the hat was sitting on a bench in the park.
She walked from her house to the store in ten minutes.
The dog ran across the yard toward the gate at the back.
He flew from Tokyo to Paris in twelve hours.
I left the keys on the desk in the office on Friday.
The children played in the garden with their friends until dinner.
She gave a gift to her sister on her birthday in December.
We drove through the tunnel across the bridge to the city.
The cat is hiding under the bed, behind the box, next to the wall.
He works at the bank on Main Street in a small town.
Multi-word prepositions in real sentences
She was late because of the traffic.
Despite the rain, we went out.
In spite of her efforts, she failed.
He chose tea instead of coffee.
According to the news, it will rain tomorrow.
The book is on top of the desk.
She stood in front of the building.
The bus stopped in front of the school at 3 p.m.
