An adjective gives more information about a noun or pronoun. In this quiz, click on every adjective you see in each sentence — some sentences have more than one.

🎯 Where adjectives appear

Before a noun (attributive position) — the most common:
a red dress, three big books, an interesting idea
After a linking verb (predicative position) — describes the subject:
She is happy. The soup tastes delicious. They seem tired.
After an object (object complement):
She left the door open.

⚠️ Watch out — words that look like adjectives

Articles (a, an, the) — NOT counted in this quiz. They're determiners — they signal definiteness, not description.
Adverbs like quickly, very, beautifully — NOT adjectives. They modify verbs or adjectives.
Possessives (my, your, his, her) and demonstratives (this, that, these, those) — also NOT counted here. This is a long-running grammar debate — see the note below.

Determiner or adjective? Two valid views

Words like my, your, his, this, that sit before a noun and tell you WHICH or WHOSE — they overlap with adjectives in role. Grammar traditions disagree on whether to call them adjectives:

Modern view (used in this quiz): they're determiners — a separate word class from adjectives. Evidence: they always come BEFORE descriptive adjectives (the BIG ball, not big the ball), can't be intensified (✗ very this), and can't sit after a linking verb (✗ The book is this). This quiz excludes them so you can focus on descriptive adjectives — words for color, size, age, opinion, material, or origin.
Traditional view: they're called possessive adjectives and demonstrative adjectives because they modify a noun. The Pronoun or Adjective? quiz on this site uses this framework — useful if your ESL textbook does too.

One adjective — attributive (before a noun)
She wore a red dress.
I bought a new phone.
He gave me a small gift.
We saw a tall building.
The old man waved at us.
She has a beautiful garden.

She made a delicious cake.
One adjective — predicative (after a linking verb)
She is happy.
The water feels cold.
They seemed tired after the trip.
The soup tastes salty.
He looks nervous.
The room smells clean.
The story sounds strange.
The leaves turned brown.
My grandfather grew weak with age.
The streets were empty at night.
Two adjectives in one sentence
She bought a long white dress.
The tall young man waved at us.
He found an old wooden box.
We had a small round table.
This is a cold and windy day.
She is smart and kind.
The film was long but interesting.
My grandmother bakes delicious homemade bread.
He bought a new blue bicycle.
The cat caught a small brown mouse.
Three or more adjectives
I saw a beautiful old Italian painting.
She wore a lovely long silk scarf.
He brought a small round red ball.
The tiny black plastic spider scared everyone.
It was a cold, dark, stormy night.
She baked a delicious, moist, chocolate cake.
The hotel has a huge modern glass entrance.
He drove a fast, expensive Italian car.
Mixed practice (adjectives in various positions)
The big dog looked hungry.
That old jacket was very warm.
She seemed excited about the new book.
The young singer was nervous but talented.
This delicious meal tastes authentic.
His small apartment is tidy and comfortable.
The heavy rain made the streets slippery.
The brave firefighter stayed calm through the night.
