Word Match
The classic memory card game, rebuilt for English learners. Flip two cards at a time and match each word with its picture — or, at higher levels, with its definition. Calm, quick, and quietly effective.
How to play
- Pick a level, a topic pack, and a board size (6, 8, or 10 pairs).
- Press Start matching — the cards are laid face-down.
- Flip any two cards. If they belong together (word + picture, or word + definition), they stay open.
- If not, remember what you saw — they flip back after a moment.
- Match every pair to finish. Fewer flips and a faster time beat your personal best.
Where the words come from
Beginner packs use the everyday topics from the basic vocabulary lists — animals, food, clothes, weather, school, and more. Higher levels draw on phrasal verbs, academic words, smart words, and idioms — with short, learner-friendly definitions written for the cards.
Frequently asked questions
- How does a memory game teach vocabulary?
- Every flip is a tiny memory test. To win you must hold elephant in your mind while hunting for 🐘 — that hold-and-recall cycle is exactly how words move into long-term memory. At higher levels the pictures become short definitions, so each match is real reading practice too.
- What is the difference between the levels?
- 🌱 Beginner packs match words with emoji pictures — great for A1–A2 everyday topics like animals, food, and clothes. 🌿 Intermediate and 🌳 advanced packs match words with short English definitions: phrasal verbs, travel and money words, academic vocabulary, and idioms.
- What counts as a good score?
- Two numbers matter: your time and your flips. A perfect round uses exactly two flips per pair — 16 flips on an 8-pair board. Your fastest time is saved separately for every board size and level, so you always have a personal record to chase.
