Word Rescue

A kinder hangman: guess the hidden word one letter at a time and keep the hot-air balloon in the sky. Six wrong letters and it lands in the water — but every word teaches you its meaning either way.

How to play

  1. Pick your level — each has its own word pool with definitions.
  2. Press Start rescuing. The word appears as empty letter slots.
  3. Tap letters (or type on your keyboard). Correct letters fill every matching slot.
  4. Each wrong letter drops the balloon one notch — six misses and it splashes down.
  5. After two misses you can unlock the 💡 definition hint.
  6. Win or lose, you see the word's meaning — then rescue the next one and grow your 🔥 run.

Where the words come from

Beginner words come from the site's basic vocabulary and common adjectives; intermediate words cover travel, money, city life, and feelings; advanced words come from the Academic Word List and Smart Words — the same pools behind Word of the Day.

Frequently asked questions

How is Word Rescue different from classic hangman?
Three ways. Nothing gets hanged — the balloon just drifts down, which keeps it friendly for younger learners. Every word carries a real definition: a hint you can unlock after two misses, and a mini-lesson shown after every round whether you win or lose. And your rescues chain into a 🔥 run that is saved in your browser, so there is always a streak to protect.
Is guessing letters really vocabulary practice?
Yes — it drills spelling patterns. To guess well you have to think like English: which letters pair up (th, ch, ea), which vowels are likely, how words end. Add the definition hint and you are recalling the word from its meaning — the same skill a conversation demands.
Where do the words come from?
Over 270 words in three level pools: everyday A1–A2 words for beginners, B1 travel, money, and feelings vocabulary for intermediate players, and academic and "smart" words (B2–C1) for advanced players — each with a learner-friendly definition, most linked to the ESLDesk list that teaches them.
